The CAP21 Industry Practicum &

New York musical theater Showcase

Creating Life-Changing Relationships with Major Industry Professionals

In order to have a life-long career in the musical theatre industry, actors must establish long-term relationships with prominent professionals in New York. The CAP21 Industry Practicum introduces you to these professionals.

"We were given an opportunity that most people starting out in the theater industry could only dream of. We were able to create relationships with leading casting directors and agents week in and week out, while continuing to stay true to our craft with the fantastic training that CAP21 continued to provide us. As an artist who loves process and technique, I was extremely grateful for this practicum because while it was heavily business oriented, there was still a huge emphasis placed on not losing your individual artistry."

"The CAP21 Industry Practicum allowed me to fully transition from a student to a young professional artist. The faculty at CAP21& provided me with the training and connections I needed to prepare me for the real world& I was able to sign with an agency that was perfect for me and soon I will make my Broadway debut as Sophie in "Mamma Mia."

What is the CAP21 New York Industry Practicum?

The CAP21 Industry Practicum is a three month training program of musical theater audition courses and master classes taught by Broadway casting directors, composers, lyricists, directors, producers, agents, and other major industry professionals. Over the course of 3 months during the summer, you will take classes in small groups and private one-on-one lessons and receive individual assessment and attention. The program offers dynamic and demanding audition training experience, specializing in musical theatre. Working Broadway professionals will guide you to explore the rigors, challenges, and many facets of audition technique, giving you the skills to get cast professionally.

The Practicum culminates in an industry showcase, where you will perform for New York talent agents, managers and casting directors.

When is the CAP21 New York Industry Practicum?

The next Practicum begins June 1st, 2010 and runs through September 17th, 2010. You will have courses on a part-time schedule. At the end of the training program, you will have intensive rehearsals for the prestigious Industry Showcase, where each actor will be featured in both solo work and group numbers.

We believe that relationships are not built overnight. It takes multiple meetings and a series of experiences with a professional to create a lasting impression. Compared to other short 2 week training intensives, the 3 month Industry Practicum at CAP21 is dedicated to a progression of learning, with classes taught by the Broadway casting directors, composers and directors who will audition you for their professional productions.

"The CAP Industry Practicum was an amazing experience and a perfect bridge between training and the real world for me. I met my current agent, Jed Abrahams, in the practicum. We were able to develop a professional relationship through several sessions together and before the semester was done, I ended up signing with his agency. This allowed me to begin auditioning right away, and I was fortunate enough to be cast in MAMMA MIA! right after my graduation."

CAP21 has an impressive track record, with recent graduates currently on Broadway, in National Tours and major productions around the world. Read what some of them have to say about the Cap21 Industry Practicum & New York Showcase:

"I think the weekly casting director sessions were invaluable...I had a comfort level in the audition room that would've taken years of auditioning to achieve. I knew the faces behind the table, and I already had a history with them...

My relationship with Joy (Joy Dewing, Dave Clemmons Casting) from our Monday Nights definitely landed me my first out of school job, "Dear Edwina". And getting an agent right away brought me into rooms it would've taken a long time otherwise to get into..."

-Jacob Richard

DEAR EDWINA

"I can't imagine entering this industry WITHOUT having done the CAP21 Industry Practicum! I walked into the program not quite sure of who I was and the roles I should be playing, and I left knowing exactly how I fit into this industry."

-Rachael Ferrera Cain

Sara, RAGTIME

"The Practicum at CAP21 gave me the chance to introduce myself to many important New York theatre professionals. As a senior about to graduate college in an already unpredictable business, this program was the most helpful and beneficial thing I have done to forward my career. And the showcase was a perfect way to leave and go out into the world with confidence and hope."

Auditions

Auditions in New York City

If you live within 500 miles of NYC, we would like to see you audition in person. Auditions will be held throughout the spring and summer at CAP21 studios. CAP21 is located at 18 West 18th Street in New York City between 5th and 6th Ave. Take the elevator to the 6th floor and the receptionist will direct you to the sign in area. At the audition you will be asked to sing and present a monologue. You may choose to present a short dance selection; a CD player will be available for your dance accompaniment.

Please arrive at least 15 min. before your scheduled audition to sign in and get your dance card. There will be one room designated for a vocal warm-up area. Please arrive warmed up since you will share this space with the other auditioners. After your audition, we will let you know if you need to come back later in the day for a call back.

Audition Material

Songs: The two songs should be contrasting in acting choices and vocal style. At least some portion of the songs should demonstrate a legit musical theatre sound. If your songs do not satisfactorily demonstrate a legit sound, the audition panel will vocalize you to determine your range and skill level of your head voice. Songs should be no longer than 2 minutes each. Prepare a 30 second cut of each song in case the audition panel asks for a shortened version. An accompanist will be provided.

Monologue: The monologue should demonstrate your acting skills. Choose material that is age appropriate, from a role that would be appropriate for your type, and shows your strengths as an actor. Acting choices in the material should contrast your acting work in the songs. The monologue should be 2 minutes or less.

Auditions Dates

After your phone interview, we will schedule an audition date and time for you. Auditions will be scheduled throughout the spring and summer until all spaces are filled.

Electronic Audition

Those applicants living more than 500 miles from New York City (international applicants) may choose to audition electronically. To audition electronically, submit the paperwork listed above (application, recommendations, headshot, resume, transcript) and a DVD with the following:
