Summer Stock NYC is the first collaborative partnering of CAP21 with The Fund for the City of New York, Pace University, Hunter College, and Capital One, as a corporate sponsor. What is significant about this partnership is that it represents a cross-collaboration between a not-for-profit institution, a public university, and a private university that historically have not interfaced but remained individual silos.
In July 2010, the pilot production of Summer Stock NYC was inaugurated. Keeping with the tradition of summer stock, the show had a singing and dancing ensemble of sixteen interns.
Summer Stock NYC played July 16-18, 2010 at The Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University, and July 20-23, 2010 at the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. The performance on July 18 at Pace University was part of the River to River Festival, which provides free arts entertainment to the community.
The future goal for Summer Stock NYC is to involve more presenting partners, allowing CAP21 to tour a full-length musical to venues in all five boroughs of New York. This will allow CAP21 to continue with its mandate to provide more jobs for professional artists, expand the training of emerging artists, and provide affordable, professional theatre to all New Yorkers in their own neighborhoods.
