CAP21 offers a variety of developmental processes for new plays and musicals including: meetings with dramaturgical and artistic staff, in house readings, stage readings, and professional productions. The process is tailored to the project. The overarching aim of the New Works Development Program is to prepare writers to be versatile collaborators who can work well with directors and music directors while maintaining their voice and the focus of their piece. They also develop flexibility to incorporate the input of all artistic personnel involved for the benefit of the piece. These skills enable them to work well in the community as they move on to other projects.
ROUNDTABLE READINGS @ CAP21
The ‘Roundtable Reading Series is an informal table reading of a new musical or play. CAP21 provides the writer(s) the opportunity to experience their work read aloud. The reading is followed by a discussion with members of the CAP21 artistic staff, the writer(s) and actors.
NEW YORK PRODUCTIONS @ CAP21
CAP21 has produced over 25 new musicals and plays within its professional theatre company and conservatory school. The Shop at CAP21 is currently the performance space for all productions. This is a “work-in-progress” opportunity. It provides the writers with a full production where all may invite audience and colleagues to see the work. There is a four week rehearsal process followed by 12 public performances. Reviews are not allowed. Using minimal production elements, the focus of the work is the development of the project.
